One powerful way to demonstrate that commitment is by becoming Rainbow Registered, a national accreditation that recognizes organizations that meet a rigorous standard for 2SLGBTQI+ inclusivity.
What Is Rainbow Registered?
Developed by Canada’s 2SLGBTQI+ Chamber of Commerce (CGLCC) in collaboration with Tourism HR Canada, Rainbow Registered is a national program that designates businesses and organizations as 2SLGBTQI+ friendly. The accreditation recognizes those that demonstrate consistent, ongoing efforts to provide welcoming, inclusive experiences for both customers and staff.
Businesses that earn the designation receive national recognition, access to exclusive resources and events, and the right to display the Rainbow Registered logo – a trusted symbol of inclusivity.
Why It Matters
Having 2SLGBTQI+ inclusive policies and practices isn’t just good ethics, it’s good business. The 2SLGBTQI+ market is loyal and growing, and research shows that travellers actively seek out safe, inclusive destinations. Rainbow Registered businesses are listed in a national directory, opening the door to new audiences and helping to build long-term customer trust.
Accreditation also offers internal benefits, helping businesses strengthen their workplace culture, attract diverse talent, and foster environments where all employees feel respected and valued.
Local Businesses Leading the Way
Across York, Durham, and Headwaters, tourism businesses are beginning to explore this important program. At present, two tourism organizations in the Durham Region have earned the Rainbow Registered accreditation:
- The Robert McLaughlin Gallery in Oshawa – A cornerstone of arts and culture in the region, The Robert McLaughlin Gallery is committed to community engagement, education, and inclusion, which is reflected in their Rainbow Registered status.
- Safari Zoo Camp at Jungle Cat World in Clarington – An award-winning overnight camp focused on wildlife education and personal development, Safari Zoo Camp creates a safe and inclusive environment for campers of all identities.
Their leadership sets a strong example for other tourism businesses across the region to follow.
