E.D. Corner: January 2020

Happy New Year!

The people that work in our industry are caring, passionate individuals.  I have met very few in my many, many years that seem to be just punching the timeclock day in and day out.  I believe, that because our industry changes so much and so quickly, we attract people that are energized by change and challenge.

I have been in the industry now for over 25 years (when did I get so old) and with Central Counties Tourism for almost eight.  The eight years at CCT have almost felt like eight first years.  The reason for that is, because of your continued engagement and growth, our regional needs have evolved year after year.  There has never been a dull moment and the relationships we have forged over the years have been rewarding.

As the new year begins, I am reenergized knowing that so many of you are continually pushing boundaries to make your products and services better.  You are working collaboratively within your communities to build a more compelling destination for visitors.  You are investing more time and money into your organizations and your own education to ensure you have the capacity to drive success for yourselves.

I mentioned in last month’s newsletter that our staff committed to hosting our annual tourism symposium with a zero-impact budget.  It really is the preeminent regional event to meet likeminded individuals, share best practices, stay on top of industry trends and learn about new opportunities to explore.  In our mind, if we had to hold it in a church basement and ask you to bring your own lunch, it would still be a great day.

I am happy to say that response to date from our regional and municipal partners has been heartwarming and we are going to be able to host an incredible day of learning and networking.  It is a true example of constructive partnership.  So far, we have:

Tourism Vaughan Corporation        Presenting Partner

Durham Region                             Platinum Partner

York Region                                  Platinum Partner

Town of Erin                                 Gold Partner

Town of Georgina                          Gold Partner

City of Pickering                            Gold Partner

City of Whitby                               Gold Partner

More municipalities will be joining their peers as gold partners and, on behalf of the Board and staff, I would like to thank each and every one of them for investing in the growth of their tourism stakeholders.

You, as businesses and other tourism stakeholders, have come a long way and the content of the symposiums reflects the increased sophistication of your understanding of collaboration and community building.  I truly hope you will take time out of your busy schedules to join us at the 2020 Tourism Symposium which will be held on Monday March 30 at the Paramount Eventspace in Woodbridge, Vaughan.
