The Central Counties Visitor Economy 2024 report presents a detailed analysis of tourism’s economic role across York, Durham, and Headwaters. Drawing on comprehensive data from national and regional sources, the report captures where visitors are coming from, how much they’re spending, and how that spending benefits local communities.

In 2024, visitors to Central Counties spent a record $3.5 billion, driving $5.5 billion in economic activity, supporting 28,400 jobs, and generating $130 million in municipal tax revenue — the equivalent of $190 in offset taxes per household. The region’s largest visitor base continues to be from Ontario, with Toronto alone contributing 62% of that spending. However, the strongest growth came from international markets: U.S. spending rose 26%, while overseas spending increased 21% year-over-year.

The report confirms that Central Counties’ visitor economy has not only fully recovered from pandemic-era declines but has outpaced provincial trends, with total visitor spending up 47% since 2019 — 24% in real (inflation-adjusted) terms. These insights are vital for businesses, municipalities, and tourism operators working to strengthen the region’s appeal and economic resilience.
