Port Perry; Waterfront and Shopping Fun
With winter behind us, the roads clear and the sun shining, I woke up longing to visit one of my favourite nearby small towns. Port Perry in Durham Region is about a 30 minute drive from our home in Whitby. It’s a small community of 9,500 that hosts 350 merchants and attracts an abundance of visitors – enough to keep 14 bed and breakfasts filled! This charming, Victorian styled town is bursting with entertainment, historical buildings, museums, unique shops, and delicious restaurants and bakeries – all in a picturesque lakefront community.
As we entered the town, we drove to the base of the main street and parked by the lake. It was a perfect day to stroll the boardwalk along the waterfront park before heading up the main street to browse the shops.
Did I say browse?
Who am I fooling, I over indulged in shopping yet again!
The merchants of Port Perry have a flair for unique home decor, handmade gifts, fresh baked goods, fine art and trendy fashions. It’s also a cultural community offering a wide assortment of activities; art galleries, theatre, scenic cruises, a winery, and even a zoo. There is just too much to do in one day! That must be why we keep coming back to visit Port Perry numerous times a year.
Before we head back to the car, we have one last stop. Visiting Hank’s Pastries is a must for us! As the door swings opens we are greeted with the sweet aroma of fresh baked goods and wall to wall customers. Hank’s is well known in the region as a top bakery and old fashioned coffee shop restaurant. It took a while to decide, but finally we made our sinful choice of which baked item to take home and devour. The winner was a loaf of sweet, iced topped cinnamon bread.
